TECHNICAL INFORMATION ON HOPPMANN FEEDERS & PRE-FEEDERS

The design of centrifugal feeders is partly science and partly art - and Hoppmann has been successfully building and supplying high quality centrifugal feeders worldwide for over 35 years! We have built feeders to handle and orient parts ranging from all types of bottles and caps to such things as light bulbs, frozen burritos, springs, fastners and delicate electronic and irregular shaped parts - at outputs ranging from 10 parts per minute to 600 parts per minute.

Our Feeder and Pre-Feeder designs have evolved over the years and the result today is a design of elegant simplicity that provides consistent operation with unparalleled reliabilty, versatility, ease of changeover and most importantly, the ability to handle and sort parts that are fragile or parts that have a tendency to entangle with each other. We even build feeders for operation in sterile environments! Noted below are some technical details:

FEEDERS
Our feeders have low profiles - typically around 1 meter in height. This permits easy accessibility for maintenance and changeovers. (See diagram at left). A conical central disc tilted at an angle accepts random parts in bulk fed via a Pre-Feeder on demand via a sensor. The diameter of the disc, its surface coating, slope, angle and rotation speed are dependant on the type of parts to be handled and the output desired. Rotation of the disc along with its slope moves the parts towards its periphery where they are captured into pockets - see description below. This disc rotates at low speed even for high output machines so as to minimize damage to parts from contact and abrasion.

Various attachments and devices such as special pre-feeders for bulk feeding of fragile parts, and ionized air cleaners for plastic bottles and containers are also available for attachment with our feeders.
In addition, these feeders are built of the highest quality materials and components and are coated with special materials when handling delicate and sensitive parts.

TOOLING
The diagram at left indicates a typical HOPPMANN Feeder looking from the top. As parts are moved in random orientation towards the periphery of the rotating conical disc they are captured into one of two orientations inside specially designed tooling whose geometry is designed for the particular part. These are segmented scallops that are precision made and designed to be replaced without the use of tools.

Many such commercially available feeders use devices such as air jets or hooks to flip parts that are improperly oriented inside these pockets. These devices tend to be inconsistent in their operation causing jams and mechanical breakdowns. Jams also tend to occur when oriented parts are discharged from the pockets into a chute and thence to a conveyor or other handling device.

Hoppmann overcomes these problems by discharging the parts based on their orientation within the pockets. The discharge chute is also designed to accomodate parts without jamming at constant operating speed as well as during accel and decel at starts and stops.
